Label + Packaging

Do I really need a well designed label to sell my product? Good marketing should work!

Ah yes, that is a common refrain. I hear that all the time! Why should I invest in a designer? I don’t have the budget for it. Or the dreaded…I can design something myself!!

“Design adds value faster than it adds costs.”

Joel Spolsky

It’s a well known fact that a well designed product will sell more than a good product itself! Never mind, yes, the product also needs to be good. But, a good product will not sell as much as a good product that ALSO has a well designed label and packaging design!

Still not convinced?

Let’s say you have been invited to a Friends-giving dinner. You want to buy a hostess gift for your dear friend. You go to the wine aisle at your nearest Whole Foods. With the expert guidance of their sommelier (Oooo, fancy), you short list two wines that will pair really well with their Vegan food. And for the sake of argument, let’s say they are both exactly the same price. Which one do you gravitate to? The one that has an okay looking label or the one that has a really well designed logo and label? It’s the latter, right? Why? Because a beautiful looking label makes the wine look good. Or is it because it makes us feel good to give it as a gift. Or perhaps, because it makes the gift look good!

THAT is the power of good design. It makes us feel good. It makes the product look good. And more importantly, it SELLS!

Case Study /// RETAW ///

Logo for bottled water

Let’s look at the concept and design behind the project: Retaw. It’s a label design concept for bottled water. The design plays off of the purity of bottled water. The logo was designed backwards so that when you turned the bottle around it would read “water”. Meaning, the water is so pure that you could read through it! Clever right?

Full disclosure: this was just a label design concept for bottled water. I had it displayed on my website and lo and behold! To my utter disbelief, a bottled water company from the Caribbean loved the concept and label design so much that wanted to buy rights to it! Whaaaa? No kidding. Good design sells. Even when you’re not marketing it!!

My design philosophy:

I’m passionate about design. Good design. Design that makes you think. Design that connects. Design that evokes an emotional response. I love to push boundaries and think outside the box. I love to create. To innovate. I love experimenting with new materials, ideas and processes, always striving to find new ways of approaching a problem, finding new solutions. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t, but I am satisfied for having tried. I accept my failures as a part of the process, learn from them and move on. But when I am done, I would have created something that’s original and fresh. Design to me is like a journey, a process, and an evolution of form and ideas.

My process driven approach to design and ability to conceptualize as an artist is what sets me apart from other designers.

Looking for something?

So how do you pronounce Ochre?

Break ‘ochre‘ down into sounds: [OW] + [KR]. It’s ow·kr! You got it. Why Ochre? I used to be a water color artist back in India and Ochre was my fave color. According to Marriam Webster’s dictionary, it’s an earthy usually red or yellow and often impure iron ore used as a pigment.

Also, in Indian culture, it’s considered a sacred color. So there’s that.

My office for a couple of hours yesterday and toda My office for a couple of hours yesterday and today. It’s been two glorious days of sunny weather here in #portlandoregon and I just had to take advantage of it. Listening to the running water and with birds as my co-workers, it was epic.

Last few weeks have been overwhelming for me personally because of losing my beloved mother in #india.

I had to take last week off to pull myself together. My heartfelt gratitude to all my clients for giving me time and space to grieve 🙏🏽

The big reveal! 😉 Here’s the logo/identity I The big reveal! 😉 Here’s the logo/identity I designed for Catlin Gabel School’s 2021 virtual auction! ❤️

The theme for the gala is a fun, family game night...virtual of course! Kinda like a game show. The client brief was to design a visual identity that was catchy, bright, retro with a casino or game show feel. The fonts, colors etc were all chosen for their vintage appeal. The TV graphic was created as a nod to the event being virtual. The last two graphics I’ve included in this video are of the other design options I presented the client. (They actually liked all three designs!!!😅)

Gala invitations are always fun...and this was no exception!

😉 Sneak peak at a website redesign I’m curren 😉 Sneak peak at a website redesign I’m currently working on for a local school in Portland. They approached us at @ochre_art_design to revamp the entire website because it was not user friendly at all.

👉 The first step to our redesign process? Craft a comprehensive Navigation Map - its 2 pages long, phew 😅 - that details clearly how to improve the website’s navigation and overall site design. Why is navigation so important you ask? It improves its usability. When someone visits your website you don’t want to waste their time trying to figure where the content they’re looking for is!

👉 Also, good navigation can place your website high on search engines. Yep. It improves your website’s SEO! That’s why I spend so much time in creating an effective navigation map prior to designing the website.

🌼 DM me if you’d like to have your website audited!

Here it is! Logo design for Whole Health in the Sa Here it is! Logo design for Whole Health in the Sates Initiative.

They are a nonprofit that tries to make healthcare more lifestyle based and prevention focused and that uses the right type of health care provider(s) in a team based, non-pharmacological approach.

The client brief was to create a logo that was professional, clean, modern and had the US map incorporated into it. And let me tell you - designing a logo with a map, not easy! We went back and forth with so many different concepts!!!! (Swipe to see some of the designs that were rejected) But we finally nailed it! 🙃

Logo design is not for the faint of heart. You really have to get into the client’s head and understand their vision for their brand! 😅
